Willie Mays: The Life, The Legend

As mentioned, James S. Hirsch is the author but the book is authorized by Willie. I guess that means that Willie has contributed, read and agrees with the content. Now there are some out there who think that the player must be the author of the book for it to be worth anything. No, that’s ridiculous. Give Hirsch the facts and let him do what he does so well, which is write. I no more want to be reading Mays’s writing (sorry Willie) than I want Hirsch getting up to bat. Let’s have them do what they do best and we’re all the better for it.  The important thing is that Willie Mays is participating in this book and it’s not done from new-clippings or what-have-you. .. In any case, Mr. Mays is out there promoting his biography, all 640 pages of it. A must read for anyone who loves baseball history.

A Few bits on Willie:

A man so damn good that one of his plays is famous and has even been named. This of course is ”The Catch”. Mays making an unbelievable and undoable catch against Vic Wertz in the 1954 World Series.

A player who knew how to entertain as well as play. For instance, he had a modified baseball cap that would go flying off his head as he ran. According to Mays “..People love that type of stuff.” .. Hate to admit it, but I do..

When Mays’s Team, the New York Giants decided to move them and Willie to San Francisco the New Yorkers got a tad upset and practically boycotted Mays’s last game in NY (the park was less than 1/5th full … now you tell me that those who decided not to go “to send a message” as it were  are still not kicking their butts for not seeing that game).
