The Houston Astros Extend GM Ed Wade's Contract by Two Years

Ed Wade the current GM of the Houston Astros has had his contract extended through 2012. According to the owner Drayton McLane “That shows the confidence that all of us in the organization have for his leadership, his integrity and the direction he’s taking the Houston Astros..” That being said, I’m sure there will be pressure on Mr. Wade to turn around his struggling team. Aroldis Chapman defected from Cuba and is now playing for the Cincinnati Reds with a $30.25 million contract. According to Cincinnati catcher Ramon Hernandez he’s throwing in the mid to upper 90 mph range and also has a good changeup and slider. It’s expected that the 21 year old lefty will make the Red’s starting rotation.

 

Bud Selig is in opposition to a plan by the state of Arizona to add extra taxes in order to finance the $84 million needed to provide the Chicago Cubs with a new training facility. This facility will include new practice filed and stadium. They propose to pay for it through an increased rental car tax as well as increasing the ticket prices of All Spring Training tickets by 8%. Mark McGwire made an interesting comment when discussing the steroid issue again with the press. Specifically he said, “If you want to rephrase it would be, I truly wish there was drug testing. If there was drug testing, I don’t think you’d be sitting here asking me these questions. There was no drug testing when I was playing. It was unfortunate, but Major League Baseball and the players association got together and got a very good drug policy.” That’s an interesting comment and I’m sure  it’s true.
